Jumbo Perch Fishing Lake Simcoe

Jumbo Perch Fishing Lake Simcoe
Perch fishing in Lake Simcoe is extremely satisfying and fun all year round.  The action is usually good everywhere, so it’s a great way to get your family involved.  Perch fishing is one of the best sports to introduce to kids, because there is usually lots of action and its fun. However, when you go with kids you should be prepared to do very little perch fishing of your own because you will be busy putting on bait and taking off fish for them.  However, that’s what it’s all about when you have kids!

Whether you go for perch in the middle of summer, on the ice in the middle of winter, or if you go for the jumbos in the spring and the fall, everyone can enjoy perch fishing.  However, if you are mainly interested in getting those jumbo perch, there are a few pointers you need to grasp before heading out.

Time of Year for Jumbo Perch Fishing

Like any big water, the jumbos seem to school up in the spring and fall on Lake Simcoe.  It is at these times when they are aggressively feeding.  Jumbo perch school up usually after they finish spawning in the spring and just before the on-set of the long cold season in the fall.  In the spring they are likely hungry after the energy spent during the spawn.  In the fall, they want to prepare for the on-coming cold temperatures when they are less active.

Fresh Active Minnows Are Usually Best

I find fresh minnows work best for attracting jumbos.  They usually want to see an active minnow too.  So you need to be attentive when it comes to your bait.  You need to check your bait often if you are not getting hits.  There is nothing more aggravating than checking your bait after 15 or 20 minutes only to find that the minnows have been stripped and you’ve been dangling empty hooks for “who knows how long”.

Create The Feeding Frenzy
I believe it is possible to create a “feeding frenzy”. You know, when it doesn’t matter what you put down, the jumbo perch will hit it?  If you are in the middle of a feeding frenzy you will know it! I have literally put down 1/2 minnows, or just heads as bait, dead minnows and chewed up minnows.  It doesn’t even matter.  Before it reaches bottom, the jumbos are on it.
I’m convinced it is possible to create a fishing frenzy by presenting bait quickly and consistently, ensuring there is always some bait in the area at any given time.  If you have a boat full of buddies and everybody is quick enough to get their baits down, and consistent enough to ensure there is always active minnows present, it is possible to attract a lot of attention from the perch in the general area.
If your boat can attract the attention of numerous other jumbo perch in the area, they will suddenly begin to compete against each other for the available bait.  When this occurs and if you attract enough jumbo perch to the area simultaneously, you can be in the middle of a feeding frenzy!
Have a great Time on the Water!
