A few weeks ago I described how the first gravitational waves were detected. This was the first time in history that previously theorized gravitational waves have now been detected. This provides proof of gravitational waves that were only predicted by Einstein mathematically. Only recent breakthroughs in laser technology (laser based interferometers) and a 200 million dollar upgrade at LIGO made this discovery possible. The massive event that created the gravitational waves was the merger of a large star and a black hole to create a super-massive black hole. This event caused a ripple through the fabric of space-time that was sent out in all directions. The event occurred millions of years ago in a distant galaxy, so by the time it reached Earth, the ripple is only a fraction of the diameter of an atom! However, the interferometers at LIGO were able to detect them! LIGO -Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory is operated by CALTECH and MIT.
