Astronomers watching Comet ISON indicate that the comet marginally survived its close encounter with our Sun.  The comet's path brought it very close to the Sun, likely causing huge outbursts or explosions of ice instantly converting to steam (solid directly to gas).

These explosions blasted Comet ISON apart leaving nothing but a remnant as it swung around the Sun.
We will be able to see the remnant in Late December when it passes the Earth at its closest point (63,000,000 miles away).  Look to the East before dawn in the dark sky to see the remnant of Comet ISON in late December 2013.
